| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description "David Sedaris's ability to transform the mortification of everyday life into wildly entertaining art," (The Christian Science Monitor) is elevated to wilder and more entertaining heights than ever in this remarkable new book. Trying to make coffee when the water is shut off, David considers using the water in a vase of flowers and his chain of associations takes him from the French countryside to a hilariously uncomfortable memory of buying drugs in a mobile home in rural North Carolina. In essay after essay, Sedaris proceeds from bizarre conundrums of daily life-having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a fellow passenger on a plane or armoring the windows with LP covers to protect the house from neurotic songbirds-to the most deeply resonant human truths. Culminating in a brilliant account of his venture to Tokyo in order to quit smoking, David Sedaris's sixth essay collection is a new masterpiece of comic writing from "a writer worth treasuring" (Seattle Times).
Praise for When You Are Engulfed in Flames:

Good condition, GREAT book August 27, 2010 Stephanie David never fails his readers! This is a collection of random happenings he had recorded. They do not mix into each other, but they are all equally as hilarious. David Sedaris has always been my favorite modern writer and continues to be! I hope something else comes out soon! Book is hardcover still, and it delivered timely and in great condition. Enjoy
A little outdated August 17, 2010 Jon-Paul Brown The writing was funny. The essays were light and well written. It was a very enjoyable read, my first from David Sedaris.
So why only three stars? Essayists publishing their works in books in this day of blogs is a little outdated. I know a few bloggers who write just as well, with just as much humor and interest, and I read them for free and moments after they post them. I'm not disparaging Mr. Sedaris in saying this, but I wish I would have spent my money on an experience I couldn't have gotten online for free.
I Want a Polygamist Relationship with David and Hugh August 4, 2010 Victoria (Minneapolis, MN) I don't know what it is about Sedaris' writing, but I've decided I want to pitch a tent in his frontal lobe and live the rest of my days as a disciple of his neuroses. "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" is another wicked collection of short stories that at times had me laughing to the point of broken capillaries. When I read the anecdote about his experience buying pot from a redneck living in a double wide with a girlfriend who referred to the remote control by the n-word, I thought my head was going to explode.
Now, to be fair, this book is not all comedy. In fact, of the books of his that I've read I would consider this one to be the most reflective, if not downright serious at times. The last chapters read far more like a journal than a hysterical composition of outrageous yarns. But on the whole I loved this volume and I continue to ADORE Sedaris. In a perfect world, he and his life partner, Hugh would open the antique doors of their country home in Normandy and say, "Welcome home, Tori. David here has sobered up but you're welcome to live with us and deplete his old stashes of drugs, cigarettes and liquor."
A different era of Sedaris August 2, 2010 Monster (NY, NY) I have loved Sedaris' work for years, and this was no exception. I laughed harder the more I read this new book, which focuses on his adult life and adventures with his partner, rather than his childhood, in contrast to most of his previous books. If you like Sedaris, try this one on for size.
Only David Sedaris can be this funny! July 13, 2010 Lanae (PA) "When You Are Engulfed in Flames" is a book that I had to read straight through. His humor either grabs you and beats you silly until you pee your pants, or else you just don't get "it". Thank goodness I get "it". Maybe I am as warped as David is, but hey, that's ok. I highly recommend this book. The world is rough out there, and you need a laugh. This book is full of laughs, giggles, and snarfs. Buy it, you'll want to reread this book.
